Star Wars Actor John Boyega Compares Working in a Big Franchise to Being in Prison

It always looked like Star Wars actor John Boyega was happy to be part of the Lucasfilm family but not everything is as good as they look on screen because apparently, Boyega had some behind-the-scenes issues with the company and the actor was frustrated over the handling of his character Finn and other people of color in the franchise.

The British star made headlines in 2019 for "exposing" the ugly truth about the entertainment industry and being in billion-dollar franchises like Star Wars. He even went as far as calling out Lucasfilm and Disney for their unfair treatment of actors like him and co-star Kelly Marie Tran who played his love interest Rose Tico in the franchise.

Now, months after the issue blew up, Boyega isn't done speaking his mind. In a recent Q&A session (via CinemaBlend) to promote his current project Small Axe, he compared working in a big-time movie franchise to imprisonment. He said: "Being in a big franchise, it's kind of like luxury jail sometimes for an actor when you want to do something else. Because remember, in a franchise you're working on one character for many years, which can starve your other muscles."

He continued: "And in wanting to be in something where I knew that I'd play a different type of role, a different type of man, and then knowing Steve through, we're all a part of the same industry so I'd heard about Steve's directing style, I was really really curious and excited to have the opportunity anyway to be a part of it."

Now, it's easy to assume that Boyega may once again be throwing shade at Lucasfilm and the House of Mouse with his recent remarks but to me, I feel like he underwent genuine exhaustion being bound to a contract that required him to play a character for a series of projects. Now, I'm pretty sure he knew what he signed up for from the get-go but playing Finn while dealing under extreme frustration might have taken a toll on him.

Meanwhile, The Mandalorian Season 2 is available for streaming on Disney+.
