Star Trek: Picard Series Will Have A Prequel Novel And Comic Book

There is little doubt that San Diego Comic-Con successfully had people excited about Star Trek: Picard. After all, it confirmed that Jean-Luc Picard isn't the only original character returning in the highly anticipated series. Now it looks like we have more to look forward to before the show premieres on CBS All Access. It has been confirmed that Picard is getting its own prequel novel and comic book series.

The two new publications were announced at Star Trek Las Vegas (via io9). According to the report, the prequel comics will be titled Star Trek: Picard—Countdown and will be written by Mike Johnson and show producer Kirsten Beyer. It will be followed by The Last Best Hope, a novel penned by Una McCormack.

Both prequels will lead directly to Picard although Picard—Countdown will take place a little further in the past. The press release confirms that the three-part comic book series will follow "a mission that would go on to change the life" of the Starfleet Captain, perhaps leading to his retirement.

Meanwhile, The Last Best Hope will introduce the new characters that will appear in the series. It might also explain what happened to the original characters and why they have come back to seek Picard out.

Star Trek: Picard—Countdown is expected to drop in November while The Last Best Hope will be published by Simon & Schuster in February 2020. Star Trek: Picard is then set to premiere on CBS All Access later in 2020.
