Star Trek: Lower Decks Showrunner Says New Series is Similar to Rick & Morty

There is little doubt that fans are already looking forward to Star Trek: Lower Decks, which will follow the support crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in the year 2380. But what can Trekkies expect in the animated series? For one, you could anticipate some similarities to Rick and Morty. After all, the showrunner just happens to be Mike McMahan.

McMahan, who also wrote the show's episodes, told Entertainment Weekly that Lower Decks is "definitely not a kids show" but added that this is so since "it's a little bit more complex than a kid show would be." He then proceeded to compare the new Star Trek series to his Adult Swim sitcom.

"The fun of Rick and Morty is that it breaks down sci-fi tropes and is told through Rick Sanchez, who has a very specific, chaotic, nihilistic lens. Lower Decks treats mythological sci-fi things just as important as a regular Trek show while finding new stories to tell — just from a different angle," McMahan said. "It's not disassembling mythological sci-fi things. It's treating them as important for everybody on the starship as it would be in a regular star Trek show."

We're loving this idea considering that McMahan's humor has once again made sci-fi more fun. Needless to say, we can't wait to see Lower Decks later this year.

Star Trek: Lower Decks has not yet been given an official release date. However, all 10 episodes are expected to premiere on CBS All Access later this year.
