Star Trek: Lower Decks Pays Tribute to Miles O'Brien

One of the best things about Star Trek: Lower Decks is the fact that you can spot an Easter Egg or two in just about every episode. However, fans have found something truly cool in the third episode of the animated series. The episode Temporal Edict actually paid tribute to Star Trek: The Next Generation fan favorite character Chief Miles O'Brien.

In Temporal Edict, the crew of the USS Cerritos tried their hand at "buffer time" where they pad time estimates so they can enjoy some leisurely time. Unfortunately, this is discovered by Captain Freeman who decided to punish them. However, she changes her mind when they manage to avert a crisis and makes "buffer time" an official Starfleet rule called the Boimler Effect.

Naturally, Brad Boimler is concerned that a rule about breaking rules will have a negative effect on his career but his companions assure him that it could soon be forgotten due to the sheer number of Starfleet rules. However, a quick flash-forward reveals that the Boimler Effect is being studied in classrooms and Boimler is forever remembered. That's when Trekkies get an awesome surprise.

After discussing the Boimler Effect, the teacher begins discussing the most important officer in the history of Starfleet and it's none other than Chief Miles O'Brien.

It's an amazing tribute to Colm Meaney's character who has evolved so much over the years. Although he started out as a minor character in TNG, O'Brien eventually moved up and became an important part of the Enterprise crew. He would later star in the Star Trek spin-off Deep Space Nine.
