Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Actor was Hoping for His Character to be Gay

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine has actually been talked about a bit recently, mostly due to the documentary What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This show stood out for a number of reasons, though it never gained the popularity of the original series or The Next Generation. Still, with a comic book coming out soon it seems like a good time to be a fan of Deep Space Nine.

One way Deep Space Nine stood out was the fact that it featured the franchise's first same-sex kiss, yet it did not have any openly gay characters. This was a bit odd and problematic, you could argue that it's a bit queer baity like Katy Pery's I Kissed a Girl, but it turns out that actor Andrew Robinson was hoping that his character Garak was going to be gay.

"I broadcast it as strongly as I could. But you know, they never really followed up on it, we never even had a discussion about it. Deep Space Nine was already at right angles to the Star Trek franchise. It was a different kind of Star Trek show. And I think that suddenly to bring on an openly gay alien, who, who was having this relationship with Dr. Bashir. I think that was maybe a bridge too far. I'm guessing at this, but I, but I think that may be it."

Robinson seems sincere in this interview with Trek Movie so it's a shame that they never made him gay, despite his wishes. Maybe the new comic book will do that? We'll just have to wait and see then.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine should be available on various digital media and online streaming services like CBS All Access.
