The first season took Hwang 10 years to make, but it looks like Squid Game Season 2 won't take as long. Netflix confirmed Season 2 in January. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said in a statement, “Absolutely. The Squid Game universe has just begun.”

Although creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is still in the early stages of the sequel's development, he hints that it could arrive two to three-and-a-half years from now

The update on the Squid Game sequel comes from Hwang himself as the filmmaker talked to Vanity Fair about his show's massive success. During the interview with the magazine, Hwang revealed that he's expecting the next season to arrive on Netflix in late 2023 or sometime in 2024.

Vanity Fair reported that Hwang only has three pages' worth of ideas that he plans to turn into script, so there's not much he can reveal about Season 2 except that more games will be featured.

"Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again," Hwang teased when asked about Squid Game Season 2. "I want to ask the question, 'Is true solidarity between humans possible?'"

Squid Game made history at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards by becoming the first non-English-language show and first Korean series to get nominations for cast in a drama series, actor in a drama series (Lee Jung-jae), actress in a drama series (Jung Ho-Yeon) and stunt ensemble. Jung-Jae and Ho-Yeon won the awards, and the show also won three Golden Globe Awards, inclduing best TV drama.
