Squid Game is steadily gaining global attention and it shows with the achievements that the recently released South Korean Netflix series has been receiving.
In particular, the Gotham Independent Film Awards officially announced this year’s nominees. The 31st annual awards gave two nominations to Squid Game.
Lee Jung Jae, the lead star of the series is nominated for the Outstanding Performance in a New Series category.
The renowned South Korean actor is nominated for the category alongside Jennifer Coolidge for The White Lotus, Michael Greyeyes for Rutherford Falls, Ethan Hawke for The Good Lord Bird, Devery Jacobs for Reservation Dogs, Thuso Mbedu for The Underground Railroad, Jean Smart for Hacks, Omar Sy for Lupin, Anya Taylor-Joy for The Queen’s Gambit, and Anjana Vasan for We Are Lady Parts.
The series, Squid Game, itself is also nominated for the Breakthrough Series – Long Format (over 40 minutes) category. The blockbuster Netflix Originals is nominated for the category alongside The Good Lord Bird, It’s A Sin, Small Axe, The Underground Railroad, and The White Lotus.
The annual ceremony marks the opening of awarding season ahead of the Oscars. It is also known that the Gotham Independent Film Awards have a particular qualification for its nominees.
In particular, films with budgets that exceed the $35 million mark are automatically disqualified from the list. On this note, Squid Game has a budget of $21.4 million. So, it officially gets qualified for the ceremony.
Of course, another reason for Squid Game’s nomination is its interesting demonstration of South Korean childhood games bloodily played by contestants for a huge amount of money.
Meanwhile, the 2021 Gotham Independent Film Awards ceremony is scheduled to commence on November 28, 2021. The annual event will take place in New York.

Squid Game is now available for online streaming exclusively on Netflix. The series has a total of nine episodes, all with English subtitles provided for comfortable viewing.
