Netflix's 2021 South Korean hit survival drama Squid Game continues to make history. On Thursday, January 27, the Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards announced its nominees for 2022, and Squid Game became the first-ever non-English language TV show to score a nomination.
The nine-episode K-drama series, written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, has been nominated for Best Episodic Drama alongside The Morning Show, The Handmaiden's Tale, Succession, and Yellowstone.
Released globally on September 17, 2021, Squid Game tells the story of 456 cash-strapped participants who agree to compete in a series of deadly games based on familiar children's games. The last one standing at the end takes home 45.6 billion won ($38M), and the losers die. The show reached more than 42 million Netflix households and it was streamed for more than 1.6 billion hours.
The K-drama stars Lee Jung Jae, ark Hae Soo, Wi Ha Joon, Oh Yeong Su, Heo Sung Tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo Ryoung in pivotal roles and became arguably the biggest TV series of 2021.
Squid Game, which drew more than 1.65 billion hours of viewing in just 28 days, also became the first non-English language TV show ever to be nominated for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. It's also likely that Squid Game will secure a trophy at this year's Academy Awards.
Netflix recently renewed Squid Game for a second season. The company's co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos was asked during Netflix's fourth-quarter 2021 earnings interview if the streaming giant's breakout series would return for its much-speculated second season.
"Absolutely," he answered. "The Squid Game universe has just begun."

The 2022 Producers Guild Awards will take place on March 19, 2022 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, California.
