Spider-Man: No Way Home Writers Reveal Changes Were Made Due to Doctor Strange 2 Delay

There was a time when Marvel was planning to have Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness released first before Spider-Man: No Way Home. But then the COVID-19 pandemic happened and Marvel shuffled the schedule now with No Way Home coming first before the Doctor Strange sequel. As a result, changes were made in the story as well.

Speaking with Variety, Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers discussed the changes that they made in the story, particularly with the character of Doctor Strange, as a result of the shuffling in the schedule.

"We were actually working off of things that were happening in Doctor Strange 2, and trying to incorporate them into our script," McKenna said. "When we started writing, [Strange] knows firsthand the dangers of screwing with these things. Then we changed it so he was a person who doesn’t know that much about the multiverse. But that makes it even more frightening, to start fooling around with these things, because it’s the fear of the unknown. Either way, he was the voice of reason going, ‘You don’t mess with the fate of an individual’ — and Peter Parker being naive enough to go, ‘Why not? Why can’t we save these people?'"

Despite the adjustments that they have to do, the danger of messing up with the multiverse was still one of the core elements of the film in the end no matter what and it seems that the scheduling change didn't really impact the story overall. Of course, you can't help but wonder what the film would have looked like if the Doctor Strange sequel went first. Either way, it still went in a great direction that led to the appearances of the characters from the other universes.
