Spider-Man: No Way Home made its triumphant return in theaters this Labor Day weekend with the extended edition titled "The More Fun Stuff Version" where fans can revisit the hit MCU flick with the additional 11 minutes of new footage that were not present during the original cut of the film. Now, it looks like its comeback also led to it dominating the box office again.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spider-Man: No Way Home topped the Labor Day weekend box office with an estimated $6 million for the three days and $7.6 million for the four days (if you include Monday on the long weekend). It was able to beat Top Gun: Maverick, which took the no. 2 spot as it continues its theatrical run ever since the beginning of summer.
While the numbers are disappointing if you compare them to the other films that topped the Labor Day weekend box office in the past several years, it is still impressive for a film that was re-released and it just shows that a lot of people were willing to revisit the film in theaters despite being available in home video and streaming.
It also helps that the theaters nationwide had their National Cinema Day last Saturday where all tickets only cost $3 and prompted a lot of people to go to their nearest theaters to see the films that they want to watch. There were also no significant new releases this weekend.
It would be interesting to see whether Spider-Man: No Way Home will be able to retain its spot next weekend. However, with new releases such as Barbarian, it is very likely that this is the only chance that the re-release tops the box office charts.
