Spider-Man: Far from Home Producer Insists Mysterio is Peter Parker’s Ally

While Mysterio is an infamous villain the Spider-Man comics, the trailers for Far from Home have been making him out to be a hero, with the latest one establishing a rapport between him and Peter Parker. With Tony Stark dead, the film is looking to give Peter a new role model, and that will be in the form of Quentin Beck.

Talking to Fandango, Tom Holland explains the Spider-Man/Mysterio dynamic:

"It's very much big brother/little brother… And Nick Fury is the head teacher who is constantly telling me off. Because I don't really want to be there. I want to go on holiday. And Mysterio is always the one sort of sticking up for me and patting me on the back and telling me I'm doing a good job. There are some really funny moments in the film where I feel like I haven't done a good job and Mysterio's like, ‘Good job, kid!'"

Of course, every fan who's read a comic is convinced that Mysterio was the bad guy all along, but that doesn't really mean he's all bad. The movie is going to be establishing a relationship between him and Peter, and it's going to build up to this big falling out.

EP Eric Hauserman Carroll is adamant that Mysterio is going to be Peter's ally for most of the film. He says:

"Similar to what we did with Mordo in Doctor Strange, we wanted to give [Peter and Quentin] time to have a relationship so that when, if we get into doing something different with Mysterio, it really feels like a betrayal… Not unlike Chiwetel [Ejiofor], we've got this amazing actor, we really want to do something interesting with him, we think we have this fun new in for it and we're hopefully setting the stage for something really spectacular and which feels really Spider-Man."

With the recent films subverting the expectations of the fans, I'm hoping they'll do the same with this movie. I mean, Mysterio being a good guy may sound like a betrayal of the character (like Mandarin from Iron Man 3), but there are lots of ways to make him an interesting villain even if we already guessed he was behind everything.
