Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Producers Hype Up Ambitious Sequel Goals

There is little doubt Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of the best animated films ever released and that means fans have high expectations when it comes to the sequel. So what are Phil Lord and Chris Miller hoping to accomplish with this year's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)? The producers on the Marvel flick are confirming their ambitious sequel goals!

Phil Lord and Chris Miller both know they had something truly special with Into the Spider-Verse. That means the producers will need to come up with a sequel that will be even bigger than the 2018 flick. Not surprisingly, Lord and Miller are well aware of that and they are aiming to go beyond expectations with Across the Spider-Verse.

"It is, as Phil said, a very ambitious sequel, because we didn't want to just sort of do the same thing again," Miller told Collider. "So, the idea that we would be going to different dimensions really opened up an opportunity artistically, to have each world have its own art style and to be able to push the folks at Imageworks to develop a way to have each dimension feel like it was drawn by a different artist's hand. And seeing the development of that stuff is breathtaking. It's the reason that we keep doing it because it's so hard to get it right."

Lord was quick to add that they are determined to do something truly different with all their projects.

"But the opportunity is to push animation in directions that it hasn't gone yet," he said. "That's what we're always trying to do. That's what Chris tried to do with Afterparty. It's what we tried to do with Mitchells vs. the Machines. It's a problem if that's your brand, because it means you can't just go like, 'Oh, I do these paintings with dots and lines. I'll just do a bunch of those for the end of my career.' For us, unfortunately we have to keep changing it."

It's certainly a tremendous pressure to continue pushing animation further. However, there is little doubt that Across the Spider-Verse will be able to achieve this and the second part could go even further.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) stars Oscar Isaac, Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, and Issa Rae. The first sequel is scheduled for release on October 7, 2022.
