Sherlock Season 5 Teased By Benedict Cumberbatch

We already know that Benedict Cumberbatch will return as the Sorceror Supreme in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But is there any chance we will reprise one of his most famous roles in the future? Cumberbatch has just admitted that he is open to the idea of returning as Sherlock Holmes. The Avengers: Endgame star even teased on how soon fans can expect Sherlock Season 5.

It has been a long time since there were any updates on Sherlock Season 5. Although co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have confirmed that they are eager to move forward with the fifth season, there have been scheduling conflicts preventing the series from being produced, at least for now.

But will Cumberbatch return as the titular detective if the time was right? The Avengers: Infinity War star told Esquire UK that he would never turn down the chance to return for Sherlock Season 5. However, he also pointed out that he cannot guarantee a percentage of how likely it would be that a new season is happening soon.

“It wouldn’t be fair on anyone else involved – I’m not going to be drawn into that. No, no, no,” Cumberbatch said. But when pressed, he was quick to point out that he enjoys playing Sherlock and would be happy to work on Season 5 when the time is right.

“Oh look, I still say 'never say never.' You know, I really like that character… it’s just, the circumstances need to be right and I think maybe it’s too soon now to see it have another life. I think, wonderful as it is, it’s had its moment for now. But that’s not to say it wouldn’t have another iteration in the future,” Cumberbatch stated.

For now, it looks like the future isn't so bright for Sherlock Season 5. Nevertheless, fans are not giving up hope on Cumberbatch reuniting with fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe star Martin Freeman so they can solve more head-scratching cases.

Cumberbatch returns as Stephen Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which premieres on December 17, 2021. He will reprise the role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is scheduled for release on May 6, 2022.
