Sedna is essentially the Inuit's Goddess of the Sea, whose cut fingers gave birth to whales and other sea creatures.

According to the myth, she was the beautiful young daughter of an Inuit man, who refused to marry his daughter off to the bird-man for not being the same species.

Despite being forbidden from doing so, Sedna made her choice when the bird-man sang and impressed her.

However, it wasn't all perfect. Sedna didn't find comfort as she thought she would when she married the bird-man.

Thankfully, her father kayaked to their home and took her away from there. In an attempt to get revenge over the man who took his daughter away, her father killed the birdman.

This led to the misfortune of bird-man's friends seeking revenge to kill Sedna.

Sedna's father threw her overboard in the cold water, and while she tried to climb back on the kayak, her father cut off her fingers to make sure that she was gone long enough for bird-man's friends to flee.

Packed with rage, she sent the huskies to feast on her father's hands and feet and came down an earthquake, dropping her into the Underworld, the land of Adlivun, where she ruled the living and the dead.

Though there is more than one version of the legend, the gist lies in her cut fingers and the Inuit tribe, both of which have something to do with True Detective's latest season.

The first episode of True Detective Season 4 shows a creepy drawing of a woman with bleeding fingers. This was confirmed to be Sedna, as the showrunner Issa López confirmed on Instagram.

Since the fourth season is leaning more towards the supernatural side of True Detective and about the Inuit tribe and the freezing waters, there's a possibility that Sedna is involved in the story.

Track back to the severed tongue and the frozen bodies of researchers, they might have reached Sedna's realm without them realizing.

Either that or, as far as crime detective shows go, the true killer could have been inspired by Sedna's story and tied down their crime to her myth.

Not to mention, there had been a couple of fans theorizing that John Hawkes, who plays Hank Prior in True Detective Season 4, "sounds bird-like", given the actor's last name.

Hank has fans pointing more fingers at him, as he remains suspicious of the incident behind hiding the case of Annie K, the first main victim of the story.
