We've long established that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always been about fan service and since the Disney+ expansion came into play in 2021, we've seen several cameo appearances from our favorite characters in various projects.

Unsurprisingly, Secret Invasion is no different and the penultimate episode finally featured a long-overdue cameo but unfortunately, it's not who you expect.

Remember Rick Mason from the Black Widow film? Well, he's back in the MCU after two years. The character, played by O-T Fagbenle is responsible for helping Nick Fury flee the United States en route to Finland to secure the "Harvest" vial which consists of a special superpowered formula Gravik has been wanting to get his hands on.

Why is Fury on the run, you ask? It turns out that Skrull Rhodey has sent out the footage of Gravik killing Maria Hill to set up Fury to the media. With the former director of SHIELD now considered the most wanted man in America, he's left with no choice but to flee the scene.

We later see him hop on a plane which is apparently piloted by Mason. To give you a little refresher, he was the same guy who gave Natasha Romanoff the Avengers' Quinjet during the closing moments of Black Widow.

Fury's connection to Mason doesn't come as a surprise because in the comics, the latter was also an agent of SHIELD. And given their friendly banter, it looks like the two have known each other in the MCU for quite a while now.

However, it doesn't look like Mason will be sticking around for long and if anything, his cameo appearance was probably just done to remind fans that he still exists.

The fifth episode of Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion is now streaming on Disney+.
