After years of anticipation, Secret Invasion finally arrives on Disney+ and, so far, the first episode has been receiving a lot of positive responses from fans while the critics' scores have been mostly in favor as well.
However, one aspect of the series that has been receiving backlash is its opening credits as Marvel Studios decided to use artificial intelligence (AI) to create it instead of hiring actual human artists.
A lot of fans are wondering why the studio made the jarring decision, especially at this time when the industry is grappling with the pros and cons of AI and it is one of the issues that is being raised in the ongoing writers' strike.
Director Ali Selim Explains Why They Utilized AI for the Show's Opening Credits
Speaking with Polygon, Secret Invasion director Ali Selim confirmed the usage of AI in crafting the opening credits and explained that they made the decision as it felt right for the show's themes.
Method Studios was behind the design of the AI-powered opening credits, which depicted images of the Skrulls' invasion of Earth.
"When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it — it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know? Who did this? Who is this?" Selim said.
While the director admitted that he does not "really understand" how the technology works, he is fascinated nevertheless about how AI is able to translate their ideas into images.
He added, "We would talk to them about ideas and themes and words, and then the computer would go off and do something. And then we could change it a little bit by using words, and it would change."
This creative decision by Marvel Studios has certainly become a controversial move as the issue of the use of AI is currently a hot-button topic in the entertainment industry as there are concerns that studios might regularly use it now.
Whether you like the results or not, this is definitely proof that AI can be a reliable tool for studios based on the prompt that they want and it is eerie to see that a major studio like Marvel has now used it in a significant way.
It is curious to see whether this will have a major impact on other studios and projects moving forward and whether this is a one-off move by Marvel Studios or they'll end up using it more often.
