Chris Evans' Marvel redemption story is obviously one for the books and it's almost hard to imagine another actor playing the role of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Longtime fans of the franchise are well aware that Chris wasn't the only actor who auditioned for the role. In fact, his MCU co-star and good buddy Sebastian Stan actually attempted to get cast as Steve Rogers before even landing the Bucky Barnes part.

Stan even screen-tested for the part but destiny obviously had other plans for him. Despite the fact that he failed his audition, thankfully, his acting prowess came unnoticed and it convinced Kevin Feige that he's a better fit for the Winter Soldier role.

To some actors, being relegated to a different role may feel like a form of demotion but according to Sebastian himself, he's glad that the stars didn't align for him during the time. In the new book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (via CBR), the star of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier said that he's grateful to have breathed life into Bucky Barnes' character. Stan explains: "I definitely want to be clear about this: I am extremely grateful I got this role and not the Captain America role. I looked at it like it was meant to be."

I've always thought Stan was the perfect fit for the Winter Soldier role and there's a reason why his stint in the MCU has continuously been extended. And as for the possibility of him actually playing Captain America, lest we forget that Bucky, at one point, becomes the Star-Spangled Man in the comics. However, with Sam Wilson now taking charge of the mantle, Bucky may have to wait for his time.

Sebastian Stan is expected to return as Bucky Barnes in Captain America 4.
