Sakugan follows the journey of Memenpu and Gagumber, a father and daughter duo of miners. Memenpu is a young genius who aims to become a Marker — a difficult job involving going to mysterious, unexplored locations in their world to map these places out. One day, Gagumber is finally convinced with taking Memenpu on this journey — with him accompanying her, every single step of the way.
Sakugan Episode 1 Recap
Humans now live in an underground world where no natural light exists, called the Labyrinth. Gagumber and Memenpu reside in a Colony called Pinyin, where they are tasked as Workers — the lowest-ranking occupation there is. Memenpu keeps trying to run off to explore the outside world, but Gagumber stops her every time. Memenpu keeps seeing a specific place in her dream, which she believes exists, which is why she wants to become a Marker. They're friends with a father and daughter Marker duo, Walsh and Lynda, who more or less influence Memenpu greatly.
Gagumber wishes that Memenpu wouldn't grow up so fast yet, considering she's only nine years old. However, since she's a genius, she already graduated college at this point. Memenpu and Linda adore the legend of a marker named Urorop, who fearlessly explored the Labyrinth. A mysterious package ends up at Gagumber and Memenpu's apartment. The contents shock Memenpu and Lynda because inside it is a map and a photo of the place that Memenpu keeps dreaming about.
While Gagumber, Memenpu, and Lynda were talking about the package from Urorop, the ground begins to shake. A monster has entered the Colony, much to everyone's surprise. While trying to restrain the monster and protect the others, Walsh and Lynda are killed. This becomes a breaking point for Gagumber and Memenpu to begin their journey.
