Probably one of the most heated debates to come out of Avengers: Endgame was whether the character of Thor was ruined by having him fat for the majority of the film. As it turns out, this version of Thor could be the Russo brothers' favorite.
Talking to Sirius XM (via Express), the Russos talk about how Chris Hemsworth was completely game for fat Thor after working with Taika Waititi on Thor: Ragnarok."[Hemsworth] was so energized by the work he had done with Taika [Waititi] in that movie in terms of coming up with a more comedic and irreverent Thor," said Anthony Russo. He also goes on to say:
"Joe and I love subversion and to take the God who looks like a God and find a way to subvert that and re-invent the character… We find ‘fat Thor' as inspiring as any version of Thor because he's so relatable…. It's a very human version of the character."
Though several characters do make a lot of jokes about Thor's physical appearance, I think it's important that the show emphasized that Thor was still himself underneath that weight gain. He's still able to wield Mjolnir, and in the end when he comes back to being a hero, he doesn't just magically shed the weight in the final bout.
We don't know when Thor is going to appear in the MCU again, but it looks like he'll be playing a part in the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. I'm expecting him to have a minimal role in the movie if ever, but I would be happy to see him have a full arc where he discovers who he is outside of being a prince of Asgard.
