Royal commentator Victoria Howard weighed in on the royal family's reaction after learning that Meghan Markle's lawyer appeared on the documentary The Princes And The Press to defend her. For her, it hit the royals differently — it "struck a chord."
"I think what has really, you know, struck a chord with the royals to release the statement is that Megan's lawyer was actually given air time to refute some of the claims that were made about her," she said per The News. "And secondly, it's kind of removed some of this mystique about the Royal Family, being a family and not just kind of being offices working together."
She added, "I think that that was the key thing that I took away from it. That actually this is showing that everything isn't as rosy as we always think. And actually, they are quite dysfunctional, more than we might normally imagine."
Lawyer Defends Meghan Markle From False Allegations Against Her
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's lawyer appeared on the show to address the allegations that the duchess was difficult to work with. It tapped on the report from The Times newspaper claiming that Markle drove out two personal assistants and humiliated the staff, which she already denied.
"Those stories were false. This narrative that no one can work for the Duchess of Sussex, she was too difficult and demanding as a boss and everyone had to leave, it’s just not true," Jenny Afia said in the documentary. Royal Family's Response To The Documentary
The royal family wasn't pleased with the documentary. According to some, they didn't like it because it somehow favored Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace united and released a joint statement to let the network know how they felt about the documentary.
"A free, responsible and open press is of vital importance to a healthy democracy," the statement read according to Evening Standard. "However, too often it is overblown and unfounded claims from unnamed sources that are presented as facts and it is disappointing when anyone, including the BBC, gives them credibility."
The second part of BBC's The Princes And The Press will air on Monday, Nov. 29.
