Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Director Didn't Regret Film's Surprising Twist

It's been five years since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released in cinemas and a lot of fans consider it as one of the best (if not the best) Star Wars films in the Disney era because of its effective ambitious story set before the events of Episode IV and the memorable characters that we followed throughout the film. It is still so beloved that there is an upcoming prequel series centering on Cassian Andor that is currently on its way.

Some would describe the ending of Rogue One as bleak since all the main characters died. However, it was still a hopeful one since their heroic deaths paved the way for Princess Leia to get the schematics that would lead the Rebels to their eventual successful fight against the Empire later on in A New Hope.

In an interview with StarWars.com, Rogue One director Gareth Edwards was asked if he had any regrets about killing off the main characters by the end of the film. He responded, "No, no. I’m really pleased that they all died. [Laughs] As bad as that sounds. They don’t appear anywhere else in the original trilogy, so if they had lived and had any sort of significant story in terms of their lives, it would have been strange for them not to have a fleeting glimpse somewhere in the original trilogy."

Their decision to kill off the main characters makes a lot of sense since none of them showed up in the original trilogy and it might create a loophole if they ended up keeping the characters. Also, the Star Wars franchise might be different if they ended up being alive. In the end, their deaths were heroic and their sacrifices weren't for nothing so, even though they only lived in one film, they still made a great impression for them to have a memorable presence in the franchise.

Fortunately, in some ways, we are still going to revisit the Rogue One world soon thanks to the upcoming series Andor which would set years before the events of the film and will focus on Cassian Andor's early days in the Rebel. The series is set to premiere on Disney+ next year.
