Rogue One Spinoff Series Was Actually Very Close To Getting Canceled

Star Wars fans might have been pretty excited when word came out that Lucasfilm was developing a Rogue One spinoff series for Disney+, however, it seems like the project was actually in danger of being canceled right before the original film's writer, Tony Gilroy, came in to write and direct the series.

Collider writer Steven Weintraub just recently took to Twitter to share the news that Gilroy had been signed on to write the pilot episode and to direct various episodes for Lucasfilm's upcoming Rogue One spinoff series. Posting the article on social media, the writer revealed that he had heard that the series had originally been canceled a few weeks ago with everyone on the project sent home. Apparently, the story that had been written for the series wasn't good enough for Lucasfilm, and so the studio was on the verge of giving up on the project right before it had managed to nab Gilroy.

"I'd heard the Cassian Andor series was shut down a few weeks ago & everyone working on it was sent home. Heard the story/scripts weren't good enough. Was getting ready to write a story about what I'd been hearing & the news about Tony Gilroy hit. Wonder what day he was hired 2/2," Weintraub revealed in his post.

This is pretty interesting news. This explains why we haven't been hearing that much about the Rogue One spinoff. There's been very little information about the series the past few months. Meanwhile, Star Wars: The Mandalorian has had quite an impressive marketing campaign. One could only wonder what was going on with the Rogue One spinoff series.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian is set to launch on Disney+ on November 12, 2019.
