It's been over three years since Robert Downey Jr. exited the Marvel Cinematic Universe and since then, he's slowly transitioned from actor to producer, a role that he seems to genuinely enjoy at this rate in his stellar career. That's not to say though that the Iron Man star has turned his back on acting. In fact, he's making his triumphant return in Christopher Nolan's star-studded film Oppenheimer.

Now, it looks like it marks Downey's full-time return to acting and a new rumor suggests that RDJ could be headed to another major franchise soon. According to a new scoop from Giant Freakin Robot, Downey is in negotiations with Lucasfilm for a role in Star Wars. The outlet's source claims that it will be for a mystery project The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau is currently working on. Of course, there's no shortage of history between the two who helped establish the MCU.

As it stands, other details about Robert's potential Star Wars project have yet to be disclosed. We'd like to assume though that it has something to do with the film Kevin Feige is producing since no director is attached to it yet.

The actor was previously rumored to be in contention for the role of Grand Admiral Thrawn in the MandoVerse but that doesn't seem to be the case. Of course, RDJ would be a fine addition to the Star Wars franchise, and given his close ties to Favreau, it's truly possible that he'll find himself in a galaxy far, far away in the not-so-distant future.

Meanwhile, the third season of The Mandalorian hits Disney+ on March 1.
