Robert Downey Jr. Didn't Want To Film Tony Stark's Death Scene in Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame may have been an action film but it also had the most heartbreaking moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the climactic battle, Tony Stark sacrificed himself by wearing the Infinity Gauntlet and snapping Thanos and his army away. The snap led to Tony's death that left audiences all over the world in tears. Interestingly, it has just been revealed that Robert Downey Jr. originally refused to shoot the emotional sequence.

In Endgame, the Avengers managed to get all the Infinity Stones and the gauntlet. Although Carol Danvers had the gauntlet, she is overpowered by Thanos. That's when Tony Stark stepped in and put on the gauntlet himself to disintegrate the Mad Titan. Unfortunately, the strain in using the gauntlet also killed him.

It's a powerful scene but Downey was not exactly enthusiastic about the idea at first. In the new book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making Of The Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kevin Feige reveals that the Dolittle star was not thrilled with the death of Tony Stark.

"Robert was telling me, when he found out that we wanted to come back and shoot a new version of, arguably, the most emotional shot, at first, he didn't want to do it," Feige said.

Downey's reaction is understandable considering he would be filming his character's death. However, he eventually changed his mind and the rest is, as they say, history.

The death of Tony Stark was one of the most shocking scenes in the MCU but it was also one that changed everything for its future. Sadly, it also meant that we won't be seeing more of Tony after Endgame. On the other hand, there is much to look forward to in the MCU's Phase 4.

The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making Of The Marvel Cinematic Universe is written by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry. It features several amazing details about how the MCU was created. The book is now available on Amazon.
