One of the most out-there Star Wars stories ever told is Into the Great Unknown. This May, this memorable 10-page comic book story would celebrate its 15th anniversary.
Written by W. Haden Blackman, the insane Star Wars story sees Han Solo and Chewbacca crash in the Pacific Northwest after using hyperspace blindly in an attempt to escape an Imperial fleet on their tail. Han didn't have time to calculate the coordinates, and this proved fatal because this will be the last hyperspace jump he will ever have.
They find themselves in our solar system and decided to land on Earth after detecting life. However, the rear repulsor lift controls malfunctioned, which caused the Millennium Falcon to crash into a forest that Han thought looked a lot like Endor.
They attempted to look for settlement, but Han and Chewbacca are attacked by a group of Native Americans with spears, bows, and axes. The Wookie was able to fight off some of them, but Han was hit by several arrows and bled to death. Upon realizing his time has come, he asks Chewie to take him back to the Millennium Falcon, where he breathed his last.
Chewie lived on to be what people came to call Sasquatch. That's not even the craziest part. After 126 years, legendary archaeologist Indiana Jones finds Han Solo's skeleton during his quest to prove the existence of the monster.
Chewbacca watched them scout the forest and enter the Falcon, where they discover his friend's remains. Indy sensed some familiarity upon seeing it and ultimately decided to give up the search for the Bigfoot and leave it as part of the great unknown.
Into the Great Unknown was released as part of the Star Wars Tales by Dark Horse Comics. They were considered non-canon for obvious reasons although some elements were made canon like moon Hovan 99 and the "Earth system." With basically the permission to go crazy, the staff at the company decided to bring together the two characters that Harrison Ford both played.
There are references from Star Wars and Indiana Jones used in the comics including callbacks to memorable lines such as Han's final words, "I'm going first into the great unknown," and "I've got a bad feeling about this place."
On the other hand, the idea of Bigfoot came from Peter Mayhew filming Star Wars: Return of the Jedi on the Endor set with people wearing brightly colored vests accompanying him.
This insane Star Wars story is the first officially licensed work to feature both Han Solo and Indiana Jones. It has been reprinted twice since its debut, the latest in 2008.
