It’s been six years since the release of the highly successful dystopian film Ready Player One, based on the equally record-breaking novel by Ernest Cline, who also wrote a bestselling follow-up novel called Ready Player Two, published in 2020.

Four years later, Warner Bros. Pictures has yet to announce if there will be a sequel to the 2018 blockbuster.

Despite the lack of official confirmation, there appears to be still hope for a second film. This update comes from Steven Spielberg, who said in an interview after the Oscars award night that he has been assigned producer duties for Ready Player Two.

However, the acclaimed director also confirmed that work on the Ready Player One sequel will not begin until after 2024.

Spielberg, interviewed while attending the Universal Pictures gala immediately after the awards ceremony, said they’re putting his projects on hold.

The reason is that the team wants to “figure out what’s next” on the table before they kickstart any project.

While Spielberg confirmed that he is involved as a producer for the sequel, he has not mentioned whether he will be involved in the project. There is also no information on who the cast members or director will be.

Ready Player One starred Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, and Simon Pegg. It depicts a world in which most people access a virtual world as a form of escapism.

The film contained several Easter Eggs related to pop culture and was a smash hit, grossing more than $607 million at the global box office.

The source novel is a cult classic and is even cited as an inspiration for virtual world games and the Metaverse, championed as the next evolution of the Internet. The description of the nascent technology borrows heavily from the description penned by Ernest Cline in the first novel.
