Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were aware that not everyone would be happy seeing them back in the United Kingdom for Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee. However, they didn't expect things could turn worse.

Meghan Markle And Prince Harry Didn't Expect Hostile, Unwelcoming Reception

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in London a day before the Platinum Jubilee celebration started. According to sources, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle knew not everyone would welcome them back in England. However, things went worse than they expected.

"Harry and Meghan knew there would be awkward moments, but they had no idea how hostile the reception would be," an insider close to Prince Harry told Heat World. "The reception from the royals felt decidedly unwelcoming."

Prince Harry and Markle attended the National Service of Thanksgiving at the St. Paul's Cathedral. It was their first public outing after they stepped down from their royal duties in 2020. However, they were greeted by a mix of cheers and boos. The incident reportedly hurt Prince Harry.

"Being ridiculed like that was very hard for Harry to take," the source continued.

"He tries not to read the negative things written about them, but there was no avoiding it. They’ve been accused of milking their fame and being money-hungry. There were plenty of cheers for them, too, but they know some of the public didn’t want them to come back for the Jubilee and that was really hurtful."

Meghan Markle And Prince Harry Expected A 'Warmer Welcome'

Several royal experts believed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not happy with the way they were treated in their most recent visit to the U.K. Royal biographer Christopher Andersen told Us Weekly that they were "hoping to mend fences and ran into a brick wall."

"I thought that there would be an opportunity for [Harry] to show up there to show the solidarity [and] the future of the monarchy. … I'm sure they expected to have a warmer welcome than what they received," the Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry and Meghan author added.

NBC News royal correspondent Neil Sean shared the same opinion. According to him, Prince Harry was "a bit huff" due to the treatment they received during the Platinum Jubilee. Prince William's younger sibling reportedly didn't feel he was given the recognition. Prince Harry "thought there was going to be a bigger platform for him," Sean added.
