I think I speak for a lot of Marvel fans when I say that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is easily one of the best Spidey films out there which almost sounds crazy considering not a lot of people were that eager to see it when it came out in 2018. The animated project would achieve unprecedented and groundbreaking success pretty much giving Sony enough confidence to expand its own Spider-Man film franchise.

In case you're not aware, production for the second Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film is underway with its release originally scheduled for Spring 2022. However, plans ultimately changed as production had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, the upcoming Sony Pictures project is getting a promising new update and apparently, things will be fresher for Into the Spider-Verse 2.

Variety reports that the film will now be helmed by the new directing trio of Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson. The original directors of the first film Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman have all been booted out of the project and it remains unclear why Sony decided to replace them.

As it stands, we still have no idea about the plot and creative direction for Into the Spider-Verse 2 but it's safe to assume that all the pressure in the world is with Sony right now to once again deliver and even surpass the success achieved by the first film. Of course, sequels are always crucial and it won't be a walk in the part but I have complete faith that the studio won't mess it up because the first film proved that they were on the right track.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is now slated for release in October 2022.
