One Piece Chapter 1,048 Recap
Momonosuke says he can't move Onigashima away from Luffy's attack. However, he remembers his family and proceeds to push with all his might.
Meanwhile, Kaido agrees to take on Luffy's punch. He asks him if he knew about what happened 20 years ago when Kozuki Oden, the hero of Wano, was burned to death.
Kaido says that since Oden died, Wano has become a lawless place. Twenty years later, Luffy and the others are the "heroes" that the people of Wano have been waiting for.
Kaido changes into a fire dragon, burning Luffy's hand. He also says Luffy's punch won't get to him because his fist would melt first. Luffy says he's not going to melt and remembers what Hyogoro taught him about Ryuo, the Haki in Wano.
Luffy and Kaido attack each other, and we see another clashing of Haki from them. Elsewhere, we get a glimpse of what's happening in the different areas of Onigashima.
There's a flashback of what happened in Wano during the fall of their country. Orochi and Kaido were starting to wreak havoc on the people.
Orochi asks the daimyo if they want to side with them or fight them. They decide to avenge Oden; however, they are defeated.
The young men of Wano have been forced to work. The river's water is no longer drinkable, and the people are starving.
There are images of the people suffering while Orochi laughs at them. Back to the present, Orochi is currently burning and saying he'll drag Hiyori down with him.
However, Denjiro arrives and cuts off his head. The chapter ends with Luffy and Kaido about to clash again.

One Piece Chapter 1,049 Spoilers
Kaido congratulates Luffy because he has made it quite far in their fight, but he says Luffy can't change the world.
There are multiple flashbacks from Kaido's life. The strongest soldier in Kaido's home kingdom is a 10-year-old, which surprised the people.
A few years later, the kingdom continues to participate in wars since they need it to pay the Celestial Dragons. Otherwise, they will lose their rights.
At 13, Kaido wonders why they need to bow down to the Celestial Dragons. Later on, Kaido is recruited to serve the Marines, but he doesn't want to be a dog of the government.
If Kaido is handed over to the Marines, his home kingdom will be able to participate in the Reverie. Kaido escapes from the Navy and gets a bounty on his head.
The Navy captures Kaido multiple times in the following years, but he always escapes. Two years later, Kaido is on a Pirate Island in the New World and joins the Rocks Pirates.
At present, water continues to flood the castle. Kaido's Flame Clouds disappear, and the island starts falling, but Momonosuke creates a Flame Cloud that saves Onigashima.
Luffy says he'll create a world where his friends can eat and fill their hearts with happiness and punches Kaido. In another flashback, Kaido tells King that Joy Boy is someone who will be able to defeat him in the future.
