Nickelodeon Unveils Avatar Studios Aimed at Expanding the Avatar Universe


Viacom announced on February 24 that it will create a new division in its ranks. It has formed Avatar Studios, which is a new division that will be producing content that is set inside the world of Avatar.

One of its famous projects includes a new animated film which is set to be produced in 2021. The announcement of the new studio will be headed by the original creators of the Avatar universe, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. The announcement was made during ViacomCBS' Investor Day Presentation. DiMartino and Konietzko will also serve as the co-chief creative officers who will be reporting directly to Ramsey Naito, Nickelodeon Animation president.

Avatar: The Last Airbender aired for three seasons, from February 2005 to July 2008 on Nickelodeon. It gained widespread popularity, garnering various awards. The sequel, Legend of Korra, aired from 2012 to 2014.

The world of the Avatar is set in a world where people can manipulate one of the four elements, which is called element "bending." If the person can manipulate fire, the person is referred to as a fire bender.

However, only one special individual at a time can have the ability to bend or control all of the four elements. This person is called the Avatar. The last Airbender focused on Aang whose innate skill was air bending while his successor was Korra, whose innate bending skill was water bending.

DiMartino and Konietzko told Entertainment Weekly that they are excited to be back at Nickelodeon. The two expressed that they are eager to build great teams and productions. With this effort, the division will be expanding and creating more content connected to the Avatar universe.

The Avatar Studio's content will be released on Paramount+, ViacomCBS' on-demand streaming service, Nickelodeon's platforms, third-party outlets, and theaters.
