Netflix's Live-Action Gundam First Image is Here, and It Looks Cooler Than Transformers

Netflix has revealed the first image from its upcoming live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie, and it looks more badass than Michael Bay's Transformers movies. The image features the classic RX-78-2 surrounded by flames, its eyes glowing menacingly amid the fire. The Gundam robot appears to be faithful to the design of the original Gundam, which was designed by Kunio Okawara for the 1979 anime.

According to unconfirmed reports, the image recently released by Netflix is said to be concept art for the upcoming live-action series. The news comes with several other live-action anime announcements from Netflix Japan, including the live-action versions of One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Alice in Borderland Season 2.

Originally announced in 2018, the currently untitled Gundam live-action film is being directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who previously helmed Kong: Skull Island. The film is being written by Brian K. Vaughan, best known for his work on the Y: The Last Man comics. Netflix hasn't revealed much details about the upcoming Gundam movie, but it's described to be an "access point" for the mythos of the popular mecha anime franchise, according to Vogt-Roberts.

The live-action Gundam movie probably won't be fully faithful to the original source material, but it's likely that it will be an "amalgamation" of several timelines.

Gundam is just one of the several planned live-action adaptations of popular Japanese anime titles coming on Netflix. The live-action Cowboy Bebop is set to release next week.
