Steven Spielberg is one of the most respected filmmakers of all time, but he's found himself in the center of scrutiny after saying that movies that come out solely on Netflix should not be allowed to contend for the Oscars. A lot of people have come to bash him online for his comments, and Netflix has stepped up to bat on why they think they deserve to contend for awards.

They post:

When you think about it, Netflix does have a point. With their platform, they can showcase more creator-driven films to more people. While a theatrical release is nice, Netflix opens up a door for people to catch films that aren't traditionally commercial-friendly.

When it comes to Spielberg's argument, he thinks that Netflix films should contend for something like the Emmys, seeing that they should classify as direct-to-video films. If they want to contend for Oscars, then they have to go through a theatrical release.

The argument therein comes when people say that the medium in which a film is released shouldn't be a factor to the actual quality of the film. Roma received ten Oscar nominations, and it had every right to compete with the other films that came out in theaters.

Some say that these comments from Spielberg are starting to show his age, and I don't really blame him. The rise of Netflix has spooked a lot of the more traditional people in the industry, but I think that the cinemas will still be a spectacle that people will come to see for a long time.
