Speaking recently at Bloomberg Screentime in Los Angeles (via The Wrap), Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that they are planning a "broad" theatrical release for the sequel to Kpop Demon Hunters.
"When the KPop Demon Hunters sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release," he said.
Sarandos added that the plan is part of their new strategy to give wide theatrical release to some of the original films that they've been producing, such as Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, which will have a 45-day window before coming to Netflix.
"What we’re doing is looking at this model and saying, ‘Okay, how do we serve movie lovers who may want to see this movie in a theater,’ and ‘How do we not harm value to Netflix?’ How do we position the film best in the world?" he explained.
"The most passionate audience went to see it in the theater, so by the time it comes to Netflix, you’ve lost that passionate audience, and you got the people that go, ‘Oh, I meant to see that,’ or ‘I’ll get around to that.’"
Part of Netflix's new theatrical strategy is to divide between arthouse movies and family-friendly movies.
"Train Dreams, last year — that could have played in the theaters for six months and... it would have done net positive to those kind of arthouse films, and then the other end is the four quad[rant] family rewatch movie… so we said let’s take those two and treat them different," Sarandos said.
What to Expect in KPop Demon Hunters Sequel
So far, plot details on the KPop Demon Hunters sequel are still under wraps, since it is currently early in the development phase. Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning to direct the follow-up.
"I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning," Kang teased in the announcement.
It is unknown yet whether the voice actors are confirmed to return. There is also no release date set yet, but reports have indicated that it will likely be released as early as 2029.
