The producers of The Batman have confirmed that they are developing more spinoff shows set in the film's universe.
Following the massive success of the first film, the franchise will make its return this week with the release of the spinoff series The Penguin which will center on Oswald Cobblepot's rise in the criminal underworld of Gotham City.
Fans have been wondering whether this will lead to more spinoffs set in The Batman universe to explore more of the characters and other sides of Gotham City that the film has not featured.
The Batman Producer Reveals They Are Working on More Spinoff Shows
In a recent interview, The Penguin executive producers Dylan Clark and Matt Reeves confirmed that they are working on more spinoff shows set in The Batman universe.
The topic was brought up when they were asked whether Sofia Falcone's Arkham Asylum storyline was carried from a canceled spinoff idea.
"That story came from what Lauren [LeFranc] came up with as the backstory for Sofia Falcone. And really, what was chosen and what was used was solely driven by what would tell Sofia's story," Reeves said.
"The character that you're meeting was actually formed through the crucible that is this experience in Arkham. That was what dictated what we saw and so, and that was all. That was all what Lauren wanted to do within that space and what she did with it."
Clark explained that it was important for them to explore more of the Arkham Asylum after establishing it in the first film.
"That was important to us, that visually it looked like--we had to match that part of it. And that's the fun of having made the movie and being the producers of the television series, how those worlds connect so that they feel like a nice handoff. That part of it is fun," he said.
"But her ideas and the story elements that relate to [Sofia Falcone], those are all new ideas for her and have nothing to do with the other series that we're continuing to do."
Fortunately for fans, The Penguin won't be the last time that we're seeing the world of The Batman on television and we should be expecting another spinoff down the line in the coming years.
It is interesting to see which character or side of Gotham they will explore in the next TV series and whether they will be able to successfully tackle it in that format while expanding the world on the big screen.
