Recently, we learned that Disney is developing a live-action remake of the 2016 animated hit Moana. Dwayne Johnson, who voiced Maui in the original, will serve as one of the producers and reprise the role as well.

So far, we haven't heard any significant updates about the project except that the titular character will be played by a new actress. Now, it looks like the film has found its director and it's from someone who helmed one of the most popular musicals.

According to notable scooper Daniel Richtman (via The DisInsider), Hamilton director Thomas Kail is set to helm the live-action remake of Moana. The film will also reportedly start filming this fall in Hawaii.

So far, Disney has not commented on Kail's alleged hiring in the project so we still have to take it with a grain of salt for now. There is a likelihood that we will hear a confirmation very soon.

Casting is already underway for the new actress who will play Moana. Auli'l Cravalho, who voiced the character in the original, will be involved in the casting process since she is also an executive producer of the film.

While the project was only announced just recently, it sounds like the wheels were already in motion for some time now and we should be expecting more updates about the film in the coming months ahead of its alleged filming start this fall.

The hiring of Kail is certainly promising since he has proven in his previous works that he is a great musical director. While he doesn't have experience directing a big-budget movie, he certainly knows how to deliver an entertaining musical that the audience will love.

Since they are adapting the 2016 film, we can pretty much assume that it will be the same story as the original. There might not be a lot of updates to the contemporary audience since it's only been a couple of years since the original was released.

Jared Bush, who wrote the original, will also be returning to pen the live-action remake. As we've mentioned at the top, Johnson's production company Seven Bucks Productions is involved in the making of the project.

As the development of the project is currently rolling, more news and updates are expected to come in the next few months depending on whether the Writers Guild of America (WGA) will have an impact on its pre-production.
