Mike Mignola Turned Down a Comic Version of Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy 3

With the Hellboy reboot going down in flames, a lot more people are getting hopeful that a third Hellboy film from Guillermo del Toro can finally happen. What's interesting is, del Toro actually wanted to turn the story into a comic, but creator Mike Mignola refused.

Talking to ScreenRant, Mignola revealed:

"I think del Toro mentioned it to me once, and I said no… I think, let the comics be the comics. Comics are confusing enough for people. Let's not have two different versions of the ‘Hellboy' comic out there. My vote would be to say no."

When it came to Hellboy 3 not getting made, it was a matter of studios not having enough faith in the project. Though del Toro's Hellboy movies did fine in the box office, where they really excelled were the DVD and home release sales. With Hellboy 3 though, it was said that there wasn't enough of a safety net for studios to fully back the project, hence the reboot.

Personally, I thought the reboot was a good bit of fun. Though it did have some problems, I was completely in love with David Harbour's take on Hellboy. I'm sure once the film hits home video people will probably get more interested, but for now it looks like the franchise is once again dead in the water. Though I would prefer that Harbour come back, I think it's now more likely that del Toro can get a second chance in making the Hellboy movie he wants. I mean, if Ghostbusters can scrap a reboot attempt, I'm sure Hellboy can do the same (which I hope they don't).

The latest Hellboy is now available for digital and Blu-Ray/DVD.
