Disney's Mickey Mouse just became part of the public domain as of January 1, 2024, and an indie filmmaker did not waste time capitalizing on it and releasing the first trailer for Mickey's Mouse Trap. Upon release, fans can't help but compare the Mickey Mouse slasher to the 2023 Winnie the Pooh horror flick.

Steamboat Willie's Mickey Mouse Gets a Horror Flick

Disney has been quite protective of the copyrights on their original characters, most specifically, Mickey Mouse's.

The character has always been exclusive and not to mention synonymous with the studio, and by 2024, Mickey's first cartoon, Steamboat Willie, has just joined the public domain.

Upon this confirmation, an indie filmmaker, Jamie Bailey, has recently released an in-the-making Mickey Mouse horror film titled Mickey's Mouse Trap, which makes the film a Bailey Phillips Production:

The trailer even included a couple more clips of the Steamboat Willie version of the Disney mascot, with the horror flick releasing sometime in March this year.

You can check out Mickey's Mouse Trap's official synopsis below:

It's Alex's 21st Birthday, but she is stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decided to surprise her. That is, until a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive.

Because of this, fans have taken to social media to air their mixed reactions, comparing the Mickey Mouse flick to the Winnie the Pooh horror reimagining which dropped last year.

Fans Compare Mickey Mouse Slasher to Winnie the Pooh's Blood and Honey

Before the creation of Mickey's Mouse Trap, Winnie the Pooh already received a similar horror parody back in 2023 titled, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.

The film takes a sadistic turn on the classic Pooh bear and his best bud Piglet being left in the Hundred-Acre Woods by their human friend Christopher Robin.

This leads Pooh and Piglet to exact their revenge on their original owner and other humans who enter their supposed sanctuary.

So, it's no surprise to see fans seeing the uncanny semblance between two of the classic childhood cartoon characters making it to the dark side:

The official synopsis for Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey reads:

The days of adventures and merriment have come to an end, as Christopher Robin, now a young man, has left Winnie-The-Pooh and Piglet to fend for themselves. As time passes, feeling angry and abandoned, the two become feral. After getting a taste for blood, Winnie-The-Pooh and Piglet set off to find a new source of food. It's not long before their bloody rampage begins.

Meanwhile, Mickey's Mouse Trap is set for its theatrical release sometime this March 2024.
