Universal Pictures announced that the new Miami Vice movie reboot will be titled "Miami Vice '85." Joseph Kosinski is directing the film, with a planned release date on August 6, 2027.

So far, the plot details regarding the movie are still under wraps. However, based on the title, it looks like it will retain the 1980s setting of the original TV series.

The logline suggested that the movie will explore "the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami" and is "inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking."

Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan and Oscar nominee Austin Butler are officially set to star in the movie, with Jordan taking on the role of Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Butler will be playing James “Sonny” Crockett.

It's been rumored for months that Jordan and Butler were being eyed to play the lead roles. Now, we finally have the confirmation that they are indeed starring in this adaptation.

For now, stay tuned for more details regarding the project in the coming months.

The History of Miami Vice

The original Miami Vice series follows undercover detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs as they infiltrate and combat the drug trade and other criminal elements in South Florida.

It became a massive hit in the 1980s and lasted five seasons. It also turned into a pop culture phenomenon as it inspired people to dress similarly to Crockett and Tubbs. It is still considered to be one of the most influential TV shows of all time.

The 2006 movie saw Crockett and Tubbs deal with their respective personal and professional lives becoming dangerously intertwined. Michael Mann directed the adaptation. However, it didn't become a major box office success, but gained a cult following in the years after.
