Prince Harry had been open about his desire to leave the royal family even before he met his wife, Meghan Markle. When the royal prince met the former Suits star, he reportedly found her as his "way out."

Prince Harry Reportedly Planned Royal Exit Just Months After Meghan Markle Royal Wedding

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex tied the knot on May 19, 2018. Nearly two years later, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they would step down from their royal duties.

Royal biographer Andrew Morton claimed in an interview on the Mirror's royal podcast, "Pod Save the Queen," that just months after marrying Markle, Prince Harry started talking about his life outside the firm.

The royal couple made their first royal trip abroad in October 2018, and when they visited New Zealand, the pair "were thinking about living in New Zealand, and they even spoke to the prime minister" of the country.

"It didn't work out because when it actually comes down to it, Prince Harry is cursed with charisma but hates being a prince, and I think that he saw Meghan as a way out," he added. "They didn't have to leave the royal family in the way that they did, but they did."

Prince Harry also reportedly spoke to Oprah Winfrey about the same thing after he and Markle returned from their 16-day royal tour.

"Harry was having conversations in a London hotel with Oprah Winfrey back in November 2018, just six months after they'd been married," the Meghan: A Hollywood Princess scribe claimed. "So they were thinking about a different direction of travel pretty early on."

Prince Harry Wouldn't Reportedly Find A Way Out Without Wife Meghan Markle

Royal biographer Tina Brown, author of The Palace Papers, echoed the same sentiment as Morton. When she spoke with Page Six back in April to promote her most recent royal book, she spoke about the same matter.

She didn't even agree with the term "Megxit" because, for her, the Duchess of Sussex didn't influence her husband to leave the royal life. It was what Prince Harry wanted all along.

"I do think it's wrongly called Megxit," Brown said. "He wanted out and she enabled him to do what he wanted. She was strong enough to say, 'You know what? You want out. I can make it happen.'"

According to Brown, Prince Harry has shown that he "absolutely hates that whole life" he was living and didn't like it.

"If not but for Meghan he wouldn’t have found a way out because he basically was a man who had everything done for him all of his life," the author added. "He had never carved a life for himself. Meghan was very much a self-starter, a self-made successful woman. She knew who to call at Netflix. He wasn’t worldly like Meghan was worldly."
