Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tried to break royal barriers as a couple working for the British monarchy. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also wanted to do some things independently, but they were not allowed to do so. As a result, they decided to step down from their royal duties in 2020.
Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Did Not Consult Queen Elizabeth Regarding Their Plans To Sell Merch?
Before their Megxit, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly came up with the plan to sell Sussex Royal merchandise for their supporters. The items would’ve ranged from t-shirts to bandanas. If their plans had pushed through, they wouldn’t have been the only royals to sell products using their titles.
However, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex failed to consult Queen Elizabeth regarding their plans, that’s why the latter was forced to put her foot down. All these claims were made in royal author Robert Lacey’s book Battle of Brothers.
“Once again Harry had totally failed to consult the Queen about a major initiative affecting his royal work and image — and the image of the crown as a whole. The family finally hit back,” he said (via Mirror UK).
Queen Elizabeth Thought Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Energies Matched?
Bower also claimed that the Queen was thrilled when she found out that Prince Harry was dating Markle because they seemed like a perfect match.
“Elizabeth II had always had a soft spot for Harry, and she had been delighted by the arrival of Meghan, whose personal energies seemed to complement her grandson’s so well. As Head of the Commonwealth and reigning over an ever more multicultural society in Britain, the Queen had especially welcomed the exciting new dimension that a mixed-race recruit brought to the Windsor identity — and as we shall see later in this series, she herself had spotted when things were going wrong, and had helped devise a strategy she firmly hoped would make things easier for the couple,” Lacey said.
However, there were some things that Queen Elizabeth refused to compromise on and at the top of her list was the authority of the crown.
According to Bower, Prince Harry and Markle not telling the Queen about their plans meant that they trespassed dangerously on that authority.
“To commercialize the crown required the crown’s consent — and the Sussexes had not sought that,” he said.
Queen Elizabeth Confronted Meghan Markle Over Her Treatment Of Palace Staff, Source Claims
Royal author Katie Nicholl also shed light on another instance wherein the Queen was forced to put her foot down. In her book The New Royals, Nicholl said that the Queen confronted Markle after she heard her complaining during her royal wedding menu tasting.
“Meghan was at the castle to taste some of the dishes and told one of the caterers she could taste the egg. She got quite upset, saying that the dish was meant to be vegan and macrobiotic when suddenly the Queen walked in and said: ‘Meghan, in this family we don't speak to people like that,’” Nicholl said.
But despite Nicholl’s accounts, Markle seemed to have a wonderful relationship with the Queen. While at the monarch’s death, the Duchess of Sussex was seen shedding a tear while paying her final respects to Prince Harry’s grandmother.
