Matt Smith is NOT in Star Wars Episode IX After All?

Sci-fi fans had their minds blown when the news came out that Doctor Who star Matt Smith was going to be in Star Wars Episode IX, and a lot of people thought the reports were certain. What's odd though, is that Smith is now saying that he has nothing to do with the movie.

This comes from LA Times' Emily Zemler:

Granted a lot of people were excited to see Smith appear in the movie, there was never any official announcement from Lucasfilm that he would be in Episode IX. Zemler did offer some hope to fans, saying that Smith could very much just be lying about his involvement:

Ever since Smith was reported to be in the film, a lot of people have been scrambling to guess who he would be playing. A lot of people were certain he was going to be a young Palpatine (clone or otherwise), but I could imagine him being a First Order officer. Now some are speculating that Smith is actually in the movie, but his parts were just cut, hence he was in the movie, but he isn't anymore.

A lot of people have been clamoring for a teaser or at least a title reveal from Lucasfilm, but it looks like they are going to be holding out until Star Wars Celebration in April. It would make sense though, seeing that Disney is still busy marketing the release of Avengers: Endgame. We wouldn't want any clashes in the promos just like what happened with Solo: A Star Wars Story and Avengers: Infinity War last year.

Catch Star Wars Episode IX in theaters Dec. 20.
