Matt Reeves' The Batman Will Start a Trilogy

A lot of people are eagerly awaiting news on Matt Reeves' The Batman, and though we only know that Robert Pattinson has been cast, we should be expecting some major news soon. As it turns out, this film will actually kick-off an entire trilogy which will likely spinoff to multiple spinoffs.

Forbes writes:

Reeves is taking his time on the project, to ensure he gets it right and builds the foundation for a new Batman series that delivers a fully realized bat-world capable of sustaining itself for many movies going forward. At this point, Reeves will be making a trilogy of films, but there will be opportunity for the world he creates to continue, be it with Reeves still at the helm or someone else taking time in the director's chair.

We don't exactly know what Reeves is planning with his film, but may have confirmation that it takes place outside the main timeline of the DCEU; the biggest hint being Jeffrey Wright being tapped to play Commissioner Gordon. If you recall, Justice League's Gordon was played by J.K. Simmons, and with Simmons being white, it's clear Wright won't be playing a younger version of that character.

While I'm bummed that Reeves has decided to drop the DCEU timeline for his film completely, I guess it's great for him to start with a clean slate. With Joker starting stories outside of the main timeline, maybe there's a chance for Ben Affleck's Batman to make a return in the main DCEU. We know that story is continuing with Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984, maybe we can have a Batman team-up down the line when DC makes their eventual multi-verse film.

Catch The Batman when it comes out on June 25, 2021.
