Marvel Writer Believes Shang-Chi Can Replace Captain America in MCU's Phase 4

Steve Rogers' Captain America has been, for the most part, the ‘moral center' of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first three phases. As the MCU enters Phase 4, there will likely be a new ‘moral center', according to a co-creator of Shang-Chi.

According to CBR, Marvel comics artist and writer, as well as Shang-Chi co-creator Jim Starlin talked about the possibility that Shang-Chi may be the new moral center of Phase 4, something that Captain America previously played well.

The upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings aim to shed some light and provide insight into the character. In the Phase Zero Podcast of Comicbook.com, Starlin was asked about Shang-Chi's traits and how it set him apart from the other MCU heroes. He said, "The transition from basically [an] assassin to a hero, an indomitable will, and a sort of religious discipline, basically. I think those are the three elements that make Shang-Chi more than any other character."

Starlin added that Shang-Chi may be the new moral center, following Steve Rogers' departure. The writer stated, "Shang-Chi on the other hand, even if he is an assassin to start off with, a moral character, at least the way Englehart and I created and worked with him, and I think most writers after that."

Starlin co-created the character alongside Steve Englehart. Shang-Chi is known as ‘The Master of Kung Fu' who debuted in Special Marvel Edition #15 in 1973. The character appeared in other Marvel storylines such as The Protectors and Heroes for Hire.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be released on July 9, 2021.
