Marvel Star Idris Elba’s Odds at James Bond Role Rises Exponentially

Over the past few years, there have been various reports saying that Metro Goldwyn Mayer may very well cast Thor: Ragnarok star Idris Elba as its new James Bond now that Daniel Craig is set to appear in his final film as 007, No Time to Die.

While these reports have been going on and off again the past few months, word on the mill says that Elba is edging closer to the role, with odds improving for the actor more than ever.

According to a report by Movie Web, the Avengers: Infinity War star is now at a convincing 6/1 odds to take up the mantle as the world's greatest spy.

"Idris Elba is fast becoming a frontrunner in the James Bond betting with punters convinced he'll be taking over from Daniel Craig," said Ladbrokes spokesperson Alex Apati, commenting on Elba's odds.

Though Bond is traditionally played by a white actor, Elba has been a favorite name among fans betting who the next 007 may be. There's been a strong call for diversity and representation in Hollywood the past few years, and Elba seems like one of the best candidates to play the new Bond. The actor's been in quite a number of action movies including Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Show as well as The Dark Tower.

Though he hasn't actively sought out to play Bond, Elba has admitted that he would take the role if ever he were approached by MGM.

"James Bond is a hugely coveted, iconic, beloved character, that takes audiences on this massive escapism journey," the actor said in an old interview, "Of course, if someone said to me 'Do you want to play James Bond?,' I'd be like, Yeah! That's fascinating to me. But it's not something I've expressed, like, yeah, I wanna be the black James Bond."

Let's wait and see whether Elba really lands the role.
