Marvel released the first trailer for Black Widow today, and the video introduced fans to some of the newest additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only the trailer showcases Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, but it also featured David Harbour's Red Guardian, the Soviet equivalent of Captain America.
A little bit chubby and bearded, Alexei is a bit past his prime superhero years, and yet, he seems to emanate a whole lot of charm and power. Marvel fans instantly fell in love with the hero, and they've taken to Twitter to celebrate Red Guardian.
However, it seems like fans aren't too happy with one particular Red Guardian sequence in the Black Widow trailer. In the later part of the video, the trailer features a clip where Alexie tries his best to fit back into his Red Guardian outfit. He does manage to put on his costume, but then Melina (Rachel Weisz) sharply notes that he's gotten fatter.
Fans have been calling out this scene, saying that Marvel is obviously "fat-shaming" the Red Guardian.
Check out some of the tweets down here:
It doesn't look like fans are too happy with how Red Guardian's weight has been turned into a joke in Black Widow. Certain groups weren't too pleased with how Marvel dealt with Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) weight gain in Avengers: Endgame either. The film turned Bro Thor into a source of comic relief and shame, poking fun at the Asgardian God of Thunder's weight gain at every turn.
