Marvel Studios reportedly prepares for the much-awaited X-Men reboot after Disney acquired its rights from 20th Century Fox in 2019. Though details about this highly-anticipated project remain under wraps, the studio is allegedly eyeing Ryan Coogler to direct the film.
Coogler has been known for creating critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies, like the 2018 Black Panther.
The film didn’t just break numerous box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time by an African American director.
But it also brought the franchise three Oscar wins and several nominations, including Best Picture, a first for a superhero movie.
That said, it would be no surprise if Marvel chooses Coogler to helm its X-Men reboot.
Ryan Coogler May Direct Marvel Studios’ X-Men Reboot
Several X-Men characters have been making their way to the MCU, the most prominent being Charles Xavier, appearing in Doctor Stranger in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022.
And to seal their arrival in the Multiverse, Wade Wilson and Logan will be working with the Time Variance Authority in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine.
That said, it may take some time before this group of mutants make their own MCU movie, and it looks like Marvel Studios is now actively working on it.
In a post on X, insider MyTimeToShineHello claimed that Coogler might direct the X-Men reboot.
Though nothing is confirmed, and Marvel Studios has yet to break its silence about it, many have already celebrated this news.
Coogler has an incredible reputation with the movies he has done. Critics have often hailed his works for focusing on overlooked cultures and characters, meaning he would be perfect for the X-Men movie.
Marvel Studios Has Reportedly Shortlisted Writers for X-Men Reboot
Deadline broke the news that Marvel Studios had started looking for writers and taking pitches for the X-Men reboot following the end of the Writers’ strike in September 2023.
Another industry insider, Jeff Sneider, claimed that the studio had shortlisted two writers who would work on the movie's scripts.
Rafe Judkins and Michael Lesslie are allegedly two of the finalists for Marvel’s most coveted open writing assignment. However, it isn’t revealed if more names are on the list.
Judkins has made a name for being behind several film and TV projects, like Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Wheel of Time, and the upcoming God of War series. He, too, co-wrote Sony’s Uncharted movie and the forthcoming adaptation of The Division.
On the other hand, Lesslie is known for his works for the recently released The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Now You See Me 3.
He’s also considered one of the showrunners of the Warner Bros. TV adaptation of Harry Potter.
With these to their names, add that to Coogler at the helm; fans can be assured that the X-Men reboot is in good hands if they get to work on this together.
