Mark Hamill has finally addressed his viral wardrobe malfunction moment at the BAFTA Awards earlier this year.
The Star Wars icon was present at the ceremony to present the Best Film category and pay tribute to Fellowship award recipient Warwick Davis. However, his appearance ended up being a viral moment due to a wardrobe malfunction.
What Happened in Mark Hamill's BAFTA Wardrobe Malfunction?
In his recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (via EW), Hamill addressed his wardrobe malfunction at the BAFTA Awards ceremony last February.
He explained that he tried on his pants twice before the ceremony. He said, "Once at the house in California, and [my stylist] fitted them and said, 'How are they?' And I said, 'Fine. A little snug, but they will do. You could let them out a skosh.'"
"Cut to us in London, the car outside, 20 minutes before we are supposed to leave. I put the pants on — he let them out four or five inches! Luckily, our dresser Mary, had a safety pin and she pinned them in the back, so I thought I was good to go."
However, as soon as Hamill walked to the stage, he felt that his pin popped, and it led to the wardrobe malfunction moment.
"They introduced me, and as I start walking to the podium, I feel the pin pop. And every step I took, they slipped lower and lower and lower. I'm not kidding you, they were at my knees by the time I got to the podium!" he explained.
While the clips of the nominees were shown, Hamill looked around to find his wife, but he instead locked eyes with Demi Moore, who responded with a thumbs up.
"I just willed myself, like hypnosis. I was trying to beam into their eyes, 'You did not see my pants fall down. It's all an illusion.' I stuck to the teleprompter and didn't acknowledge it. I didn't want to make a joke or bring any attention to it," he said.
How Did Mark Hamill Deal with the Wardrobe Malfunction Incident After?
While the moment was embarrassing for Hamill, only audience members from the side were able to see the wardrobe malfunction on the stage.
During the afterparty, Timothee Chalamet and Edward Norton approached Hamill to show their respect.
"[They] came up to me at the after-party and said, 'Dude, that was a master class in professionalism,'" Hamill recalled.
The incident was not in the headline of the major news sites, but Stephen Colbert discussed it on his show days after.
"Thanks for bringing it to the American public... I thought maybe nobody noticed, and for the most part, nobody did. And when I got back someone said, 'Hey, Colbert really nailed you on 'Meanwhile,'" Hamill told the host.
The actor ended his story by assuring the live audience that his pants "are very secure tonight."
