Lady Mariko (played by Anna Sawai) is on her last wit, considering she failed to hold her word and duty to Lord Toranaga's orders. As a devoted follower of the church, she meets Father Martin (Tommy Bastow) once more.

Truth be told, this isn't the first time that Lady Mariko has crossed paths with the Portuguese priest. Their first meeting had occurred 14 years ago when Toda Mariko was running away while she was pregnant with Buntaro's child.

At the time, she was also mourning her father's betrayal and how she had to bury her emotions through the eightfold fence she had taught John Blackthorne in the previous episodes.

Now, in Shōgun episode 9 titled Crimson Sky, she is forced upon another circumstance that leads her to arrange a confession with Father Martin, whom she confides in for her last wishes.

The act of seppuku may be to die of honor and shame, but it isn't upheld in good image in the church, which is why Father Martin's summoned presence is for Lady Mariko to speak her last words before she meets her demise.

Unfortunately, the episode doesn't let Lady Mariko speak her last wish. Instead, we get to listen to Father Martin's Latin song to bring her journey to an end, somehow.

Although we don't get to hear this from Lady Mariko herself in the episode, the original adaptation stated that she had actually confessed her true feelings for John Blackthorne to the priest.

Knowing full well that nothing good could ever come to the white samurai if she had chosen to open her feelings to him when she was expecting death, perhaps through this holy confession, she would find peace in having said it with her own words.
