Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil Defeats Joker With $37M Opening Weekend

Angelina Jolie has once again proven that she is the Mistress of the Box Office. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil has defeated Joker at the weekend box office with an amazing $37 million take on its opening weekend.

Mistress of Evil hit theaters on October 18 and promptly took in $12.5 million on its opening day. As per Comicbook.com, the sequel's opening weekend is expected to rake in $37 million, which isn't as good as its $40 million projections but still good enough to defeat the Joaquin Phoenix movie. Joker is set to earn $28 million on its third weekend.

The second Maleficent film brings back Jolie as the titular fairy who tries to prevent her beloved Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) from marrying Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson) because of her distrust of humans. However, Phillip's mother Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) appears to have ulterior motives for pushing for the marriage between Aurora and her son.

Although there is little doubt that Mistress of Evil wins this weekend, it is still Joker that is enjoying the long-term victory. The Todd Phillips movie is currently being declared as Warner Bros.' most successful film of the year. Joker's $28 million haul over its third weekend will bring its total gains to $248 million, which really isn't bad for a movie that follows the story of a DC supervillain. It's safe to say that the baddies are the true winners this week.

Both Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Joker are currently screening in theaters worldwide.
