Lucasfilm VP Addressed Star Wars Fatigue over New Content

We are finally getting more Star Wars content in the next few months and in the following year, thanks to new releases on Disney+. But does this mean that the franchise is once again in danger of oversaturation? Lucasfilm vice president James Waugh doesn't seem to be too worried about that and he credits it all to the diverse Star Wars content in their line-up.

It's no secret that the Star Wars sequel trilogy and the standalone films that came in quick succession starting 2015 seemed like a bad move for the franchise. The movies, no matter how grand their scale, didn't have the expected effect on fans and this was attributed to "Star Wars fatigue."

So will this happen again now that we're getting new Star Wars content every few months? Waugh believes in the new material and claims that fans will never get tired of what Lucasfilm is producing right now.

"Are we worried about oversaturation? I think we're always very thoughtful and cautious about how do we keep Star Wars' specialness in this landscape," Waugh told The Direct. "We're mindful, but this wasn't one of those instances where we had our spidey senses on a lot because we felt this was such a new offering."

Waugh continued by singling out the anime anthology series Star Wars: Visions as a truly unique project.

"When it comes to things like Visions, I would say that we weren't ever concerned about the oversaturation potentiality with Visions in particular, and I think the reason was we were offering something that's kind of a diversification of what the offering is... We weren't concerned that this was going to impact Star Wars in aggregate, we thought this would be a breath of fresh air for people to explore Star Wars in an exciting new way," he said.

Things certainly have changed with Star Wars since the release of The Mandalorian which focused on completely new characters while also giving fans the sweet thrill of nostalgia. The animated shows like the final season of The Clone Wars and its spin-off The Bad Batch have also been different in their own ways. Needless to say, with all this diversity, there's always something for everyone who loves Star Wars.

Star Wars: Visions will premiere on September 22, 2021.
